I am so not cool

Of all the Oscar nominationed movies this year, I have seen exactly zero. Maybe it's because I have a toddler, a full-time job, a demanding life, and an attention span challenged by some 30 minute television shows, but still, NOT ONE!

A family resemblance.

Like mother like son. Son has better technology.

Woah priorities.

I'll start this post by saying that I have a husband with some fashion sense. I think he sometimes tries to get a reaction out of me with certain pieces (i.e. a dreadful muscle tank) but overall he can pull together a nice outfit (although he says only girls wear "outfits" so maybe it's an ensemble). Most of the time, if I tell him what to wear, it's only so that we can match as a family, or not match too much, not because I don't trust his judgement.

Apparently, this isn't the case for a lot of women. Men's Wearhouse recently did a survey asking women what they would be willing to give up in exchange for a better dressed partner.

10% of women would give up sex for a year.
10% of women would give up the internet.
20% would give up vacation days.
23% would give up their cell phones.
37% of women would give up going out to dinner.

I find this a little shocking. Seriously, a quarter of women would give up their cell phone? Maybe just get him a subscription to GQ or something.

What's in a name?

For us, a lot of discussion and different ideas about the connotations and future "professions" that may be associated with a girl's name.

It's actually amazing that Carter has a name. Carter James, to be exact. Which I love.  I didn't fill out Carter's birth certificate for 3 days because we couldn't decide between 2 middle names. It was stressful. Note to nurses: stop pressuring very hormonal, partially drugged, sleep deprived, brand new mothers in lots of pain about the birth certificate.

This time is harder because I want a name that we love and that meshes well with Carter. After a long process, we have a few front runners. Some of these we like more than others.

So what do you think? I'll go ahead and tell you that I will not agree to be bound by the results. And we're also open to suggestions, but I may very well ignore them.

Happy 20 Months

Hot and steamy Valentine's Day

Before you avert your eyes, let me clarify.

Carter is really sick. Last night, after begging us to put him to bed an hour early and not eating dinner (which, has never happened. teething, pneumonia, nothing has ever affected his appetite and yesterday he just wouldn't eat), he just kept hacking and hacking, then whimper, then cough some more. I eventually pulled him out of  bed and brought him into the bathroom and turned the shower on, hoping the steam would help him breathe and settle the cough a little.

As I was sitting there in the dark with the shower on, holding my sweet boy who was softly murmuring like a crazy person in his delirium, I had to laugh a little. It's just so fitting that our Valentine's Day this year would go that way. Even more so because I have two solid days of meetings at work and absolutely cannot stay home, which is a perfect storm just ripe for major illness (both his and mine).

Luckily Daddy is home with him and was able to get him into the doctor this morning who confirmed an awful ear infection and started some antibiotics. But, she also confirmed that he's really smart and his language skills are better than most 2 year olds. And she's a doctor, so it must be a fact :)

Kids say the darndest things

I love asking Carter what noises animals make. It is pretty much the funniest thing ever. It also works when he's cranky or falling asleep in the car and I'm trying to keep him awake, as was the case this weekend. After we'd gone through several animals, I
asked him what a birdie says.

His response: "Tweet! Tweet! Tweet! I'm flying!"

99 days.

That sound is me breathing in a paper bag. We're officially down to double digits, 99 days until baby girl's due date. I know 99 days is a long time, but it's not that long to prepare to bring a human home, integrate her into the chaos of our life, and somehow make sure all 4 of us (5 including the dog) survive those first few months.

Personally, I would feel a whole lot better if she had a name.

Sign of the (pregnant) times

I did not have a good morning. As a result, I feel particularly vulnerable to two cravings:

1. Girl Scout Cookies
2. Pajama Jeans.

25 weeks.

Today, I'm 25 weeks pregnant and baby is roughly the size of an "average rutabaga" (thanks to babycenter.com for the very relevant and useful metric).

Why is 25 weeks important? Because she's now considered "viable." Of course, she would need a lot of help and likely have some long term problems, but it's pretty crazy that 50-70% of babies born at 24-25 weeks survive and more than 90% of babies born at 26-27 weeks survive.

Seth and I have both been approaching this baby like we're in the beginning and she won't be here for a long time, but that's less and less true every day. She's going to be here before we know it, and she's also going to need a place to sleep and some clothes to wear. and a name...
